A dryer should smell like clean laundry, not hot dust or scorching fabric. If a customer tells me the dryer has a burning smell, my first advice is simple: stop the cycle and do not keep testing it with another load.
I wrote this guide for homeowners who want a clear read on the symptom before scheduling service. A blog post cannot diagnose a machine from across town, but it can help you collect the right clues and avoid the most common wrong turns.
Lint is more than a nuisance
Lint around the filter, blower housing or vent path can overheat. Clean the lint screen and check the outside vent flap. If airflow feels weak outside while the dryer is running, that is a real clue.
New smells and old smells are different
A brand-new heating element can have a temporary hot smell. A dryer that suddenly smells burnt after years of use is a different story, especially if drying times have also increased.
Heat problems can hide behind airflow problems
A thermostat or heater issue can cause overheating, but poor airflow can create similar symptoms. A proper diagnosis checks the appliance and the vent path instead of guessing at one part.
What I would check on a service call
On a real visit, I compare the symptom with the model design, installation, airflow or water path, and any stored error codes. I also look for the simple stuff first, because a blocked vent, dirty filter, loose connection or loading issue can imitate a failed part.
