Dryer Repair Guide

Dryer Takes Two Cycles? Heat Is Only Half the Job

If a load that used to dry in one cycle now needs two, do not judge the dryer by whether it feels warm. A vented dryer needs heat, tumbling and a clear route for moist air to leave. More time will not correct a blocked exhaust.

Start with how wet the clothes were

Lift a towel before transferring the load. Was it unusually heavy or dripping after the washer finished? A poor washer spin sends more water into the dryer and extends drying time even if the dryer is working normally.

Compare similar loads rather than jeans one day and lightweight shirts the next. Fabric, quantity and selected settings all affect the time needed.

Clean the lint filter every load

Remove lint before starting. If the manual calls for washing the screen to remove residue, follow its method and dry it before reinstalling. A screen that looks clear is not proof that the entire exhaust route is clear.

Never run the dryer without its filter. Lint belongs outside the machine through an approved airflow path, not loose inside the cabinet.

Check the visible exhaust route

With the dryer stopped, look for a crushed or kinked connection behind it if visible without moving the machine. Check the outdoor exhaust opening from a safe location for an obvious obstruction. Do not climb onto the roof or reach into moving equipment to complete a homeowner check.

A long concealed duct may need professional inspection and cleaning. Seeing air at the exterior opening does not measure whether airflow meets the appliance’s requirement.

Settings and load size still matter

Confirm that you selected a heated cycle if appropriate for the fabric. Air-only settings do not add heat. Avoid stuffing the drum so full that items cannot tumble, and separate a small lightweight item from a much heavier load when their drying needs differ.

For a ventless condenser or heat-pump dryer, the checks are different. Use its filter, reservoir and heat-exchanger maintenance instructions; do not apply an outdoor-vent checklist to a machine that has no outdoor vent.

When to stop using it

An unusually hot cabinet, burning smell, repeated shutdown or weak exhaust is a reason to stop and arrange inspection. Do not keep adding cycles to push a questionable dryer through the laundry. USFA guidance emphasizes cleaning lint filters and dryer vents to reduce fire risk.

What service should establish

A proper diagnosis compares drying performance, heat and airflow with the model’s requirements. Tell the technician whether clothes begin wetter than usual and whether drying time changed after moving the dryer. The repair may involve the appliance, the exhaust system or both. Replacing a heating element without checking airflow can leave the original problem untouched.

Before you schedule a visit

Take a photo of the model and serial label, and write down when the problem started. If the display shows an error, photograph the full code before clearing it. Mention recent installation work, a power outage, a move, or anything you already tried. Those details help narrow the diagnosis and identify the correct parts for your exact appliance.

Keep the owner’s manual handy. Controls, serviceable filters, installation requirements and normal sounds vary by model. A symptom can point toward several components; it cannot confirm which part needs replacement.
