Finding a half-melted pod in the bottom of the dishwasher is frustrating, especially when the dishes still look dirty. The dispenser gets blamed first, but it is not always the guilty part.
I wrote this guide for homeowners who want a clear read on the symptom before scheduling service. A blog post cannot diagnose a machine from across town, but it can help you collect the right clues and avoid the most common wrong turns.
The pod needs water and spray
If a pan blocks the dispenser door or the lower spray arm cannot turn, detergent may never get hit properly. Check for tall items, dropped utensils and racks that are loaded too tightly.
Temperature matters
Dishwasher detergent works best with hot water. Run the kitchen sink hot before starting the dishwasher and see whether performance improves. If not, do not keep adding detergent.
Circulation problems leave other clues
Gritty glasses, dirty upper-rack dishes and a quiet wash motor can point toward weak circulation. That is different from a simple dispenser door issue.
What I would check on a service call
On a real visit, I compare the symptom with the model design, installation, airflow or water path, and any stored error codes. I also look for the simple stuff first, because a blocked vent, dirty filter, loose connection or loading issue can imitate a failed part.
