Dishwasher Not Cleaning? Check Where the Dirty Dishes Sit

If the same bowls come out dirty every night, take a look at where they sit. A dishwasher that misses one crowded corner is telling you something different from a machine that leaves every item untouched.

Before buying a stronger detergent, compare the dirty items, their location and the detergent dispenser after the cycle.

Make room for water to reach the dishes

Remove large food scraps and load according to the rack diagram in the manual. Keep items from nesting together and avoid placing a pan where it shields an entire row. Check that tall utensils do not block the spray arms or dispenser door.

With the machine stopped, rotate an accessible spray arm gently if the manual permits it. It should have the clearance it needs. Do not assume an arm can reach through a serving spoon simply because the door closes.

Check the filter and spray openings

Clean an owner-removable filter as directed and seat it correctly afterward. Inspect accessible spray openings for visible debris using the approved cleaning method. Do not enlarge holes with a drill or dismantle a pump to investigate grit.

A partially blocked route can reduce cleaning even when the machine sounds busy. Sound alone does not measure wash pressure.

What happened to the detergent?

An intact pod or a full dispenser at the end of the cycle is worth reporting. Check that the dispenser is not blocked by a dish and that detergent is fresh, dry and intended for automatic dishwashers. Do not use hand dish soap; the resulting foam can cause leaks and poor performance.

An undissolved pod does not necessarily mean the dispenser itself is broken. The cycle may have been interrupted or water delivery may be inadequate.

Verify the cycle and water instructions

Choose a cycle appropriate for the soil level. A short cycle may not suit baked-on food. Check the manual’s incoming-water requirements and hot-water connection guidance. Do not raise the household water-heater setting blindly to troubleshoot one appliance.

Rinse aid can help with drying and spotting, but it cannot restore missing wash action. Treat greasy residue, mineral film and food particles as separate observations.

When the appliance needs testing

If loading, cleaning and detergent checks do not help, a technician may need to evaluate filling, circulation, heating and the dispenser sequence. Describe whether only the upper rack fails, whether the tub fills and whether the cycle completes normally.

Photograph the load before and after one ordinary cycle you were already running. Useful evidence does not require extra cycles of wasted water. The objective is even cleaning throughout a correctly loaded machine, not a workaround that leaves half the rack unusable.

Before you schedule a visit

Take a photo of the model and serial label, and write down when the problem started. If the display shows an error, photograph the full code before clearing it. Mention recent installation work, a power outage, a move, or anything you already tried. Those details help narrow the diagnosis and identify the correct parts for your exact appliance.

Keep the owner’s manual handy. Controls, serviceable filters, installation requirements and normal sounds vary by model. A symptom can point toward several components; it cannot confirm which part needs replacement.
