A dishwasher can look clean from the outside and still smell rough when you open the door. In a lot of homes, the fix starts with the filter and the way food soil is moving through the machine.
I wrote this guide for homeowners who want a clear read on the symptom before scheduling service. A blog post cannot diagnose a machine from across town, but it can help you collect the right clues and avoid the most common wrong turns.
The filter is the first stop
Many newer dishwashers have a removable filter under the lower spray arm. If it is packed with soft food debris, the machine can recirculate odor every cycle.
Standing water changes the diagnosis
A little water in the sump can be normal. A pool of dirty water across the bottom is not. If odor comes with poor draining, look at the drain hose, sink connection and garbage disposal knockout history.
Detergent cannot fix bad water movement
More detergent may leave film and make smells worse. If dishes are gritty or soap is left behind, the issue may be wash circulation, water temperature or loading.
What I would check on a service call
On a real visit, I compare the symptom with the model design, installation, airflow or water path, and any stored error codes. I also look for the simple stuff first, because a blocked vent, dirty filter, loose connection or loading issue can imitate a failed part.
