Washer Leaves Clothes Soaking Wet? Drain Comes Before Spin

When clothes come out heavy and dripping, most people say the washer did not spin. Sometimes that is true. But often the washer never got the water out well enough to reach a proper high-speed spin.

I wrote this guide for homeowners who want a clear read on the symptom before scheduling service. A blog post cannot diagnose a machine from across town, but it can help you collect the right clues and avoid the most common wrong turns.

Drainage is the first question

If water is still sitting in the tub, the washer may be protecting itself from spinning a full load of water. That points toward the drain path, pump, hose height, or a blocked filter depending on the machine.

Balance can cancel the spin

A single blanket, bath mat or small mixed load can bunch up and make the washer stop trying. Run a drain-and-spin with a balanced load if it is safe to do so, and note whether the drum ever reaches high speed.

Do not judge by sound alone

A washer can make motor noise without actually spinning correctly. The useful detail is what the drum does, whether the water leaves, and whether an error code appears.

What I would check on a service call

On a real visit, I compare the symptom with the model design, installation, airflow or water path, and any stored error codes. I also look for the simple stuff first, because a blocked vent, dirty filter, loose connection or loading issue can imitate a failed part.

If you are in Jacksonville or the Beaches and want help with this symptom, see my washer repair page or call/text the number below. I am Mason Hedlund, owner and technician at Hedlund Appliance Service, and I would rather give you a straight explanation than sell you a part you do not need.
