Gas Oven Clicks but Won't Light? Safety Comes First

When a gas oven clicks but never lights, the safest answer is patience and fresh air, not repeated attempts. Gas appliances deserve a slower, more careful troubleshooting rhythm.

I wrote this guide for homeowners who want a clear read on the symptom before scheduling service. A blog post cannot diagnose a machine from across town, but it can help you collect the right clues and avoid the most common wrong turns.

Surface burners do not prove the oven is fine

Cooktop burners and oven burners can use different ignition paths. A working stovetop does not rule out an oven igniter, valve or control issue.

Smell changes the plan

If you smell gas strongly or the odor does not clear, stop using the appliance, avoid switches and follow gas safety guidance. A repair appointment can wait until the area is safe.

Timing helps diagnosis

Tell the technician whether the igniter glows, whether clicking continues, and whether the oven ever lights after a long delay. Those details matter more than guessing at a part name.

What I would check on a service call

On a real visit, I compare the symptom with the model design, installation, airflow or water path, and any stored error codes. I also look for the simple stuff first, because a blocked vent, dirty filter, loose connection or loading issue can imitate a failed part.

If you are in Jacksonville or the Beaches and want help with this symptom, see my gas oven repair page or call/text the number below. I am Mason Hedlund, owner and technician at Hedlund Appliance Service, and I would rather give you a straight explanation than sell you a part you do not need.
