An oven that preheats once and then gives up is especially annoying because it looks like it is working right until dinner is already underway. The pattern after preheat is the clue.
I wrote this guide for homeowners who want a clear read on the symptom before scheduling service. A blog post cannot diagnose a machine from across town, but it can help you collect the right clues and avoid the most common wrong turns.
The display matters
Does the clock reset, show an error, or stay normal while heat disappears? A blank display points a different direction than an oven that calmly says it is still at temperature.
Heat cycling is normal, quitting is not
All ovens cycle heat on and off. The problem is when the temperature drops and never recovers, or the unit shuts down completely.
Ventilation can play a role
Built-in ovens need proper cooling airflow. If the issue started after cabinet work or installation changes, mention that. Heat trapped around controls can create strange behavior.
What I would check on a service call
On a real visit, I compare the symptom with the model design, installation, airflow or water path, and any stored error codes. I also look for the simple stuff first, because a blocked vent, dirty filter, loose connection or loading issue can imitate a failed part.
