Washer Smells Like Sewer? The Source May Not Be the Washer

Washer odor is one of those problems that makes a laundry room feel dirty even when you just cleaned it. The important thing is separating mildew inside the machine from sewer gas around the drain.

I wrote this guide for homeowners who want a clear read on the symptom before scheduling service. A blog post cannot diagnose a machine from across town, but it can help you collect the right clues and avoid the most common wrong turns.

Front-load residue has a distinct pattern

If the smell is strongest inside the drum or gasket, detergent residue and trapped moisture may be feeding mildew. Use the correct amount of HE detergent, wipe the door gasket, and leave the door cracked when the washer is idle.

A drain smell may be plumbing-related

If the odor is strongest near the standpipe or wall box, the washer may not be the source. A dry trap, poor drain setup, or venting issue can smell like the machine is failing even when it washes normally.

Standing water is a repair clue

Water that remains in the tub, filter area or drain hose can hold odor. If the washer also drains slowly or leaves clothes wet, treat the smell as part of a bigger diagnosis.

What I would check on a service call

On a real visit, I compare the symptom with the model design, installation, airflow or water path, and any stored error codes. I also look for the simple stuff first, because a blocked vent, dirty filter, loose connection or loading issue can imitate a failed part.

If you are in Jacksonville or the Beaches and want help with this symptom, see my washing machine service page or call/text the number below. I am Mason Hedlund, owner and technician at Hedlund Appliance Service, and I would rather give you a straight explanation than sell you a part you do not need.
