A burner that will not shut down is one of those appliance problems I take seriously right away. Heat that ignores the knob is not a quirk. It is a control problem until proven otherwise.
I wrote this guide for homeowners who want a clear read on the symptom before scheduling service. A blog post cannot diagnose a machine from across town, but it can help you collect the right clues and avoid the most common wrong turns.
Turn it off at the breaker if needed
If the element remains hot after the knob is off, do not leave it unattended. If it is safe to do so, shut power off at the breaker and keep the surface clear.
Indicator lights can mislead
A hot-surface light staying on is not the same as an element actively heating. Tell the technician whether the burner itself keeps glowing or only the warning light stays lit.
One burner versus all burners matters
A single uncontrolled burner points a different way than a whole cooktop acting strange. Photos of the control panel and model tag help narrow the correct repair path.
What I would check on a service call
On a real visit, I compare the symptom with the model design, installation, airflow or water path, and any stored error codes. I also look for the simple stuff first, because a blocked vent, dirty filter, loose connection or loading issue can imitate a failed part.
