I like repairing appliances, but I do not think every machine deserves another part. A good repair call should help you make a sane decision, even when that decision is to stop spending money on the appliance.
I wrote this guide for homeowners who want a clear read on the symptom before scheduling service. A blog post cannot diagnose a machine from across town, but it can help you collect the right clues and avoid the most common wrong turns.
Age is only one factor
A newer appliance with a clear failed component may be worth fixing. An older unit with multiple symptoms, rust, or expensive electronic failures may not be. The brand, model and condition all matter.
Look at the whole household cost
Replacement means delivery, installation, haul-away, possible cabinet fit issues and time without the appliance. Repair means diagnosis, parts and labor. Compare the real numbers, not just the sale tag online.
Ask for the risk, not just the price
A useful diagnosis should explain what failed, what the repair would cost, and whether there are signs of other near-term problems. That is the difference between a quote and advice.
What I would check on a service call
On a real visit, I compare the symptom with the model design, installation, airflow or water path, and any stored error codes. I also look for the simple stuff first, because a blocked vent, dirty filter, loose connection or loading issue can imitate a failed part.
